Cambridge: C2 Proficiency

Interactive preparation course for the C2 level of the Cambridge English exams.

Course Description

The C2 Proficiency (CPE) level of Cambridge English Qualifications. It is the highest level that shows that you are a highly competent speaker of English. A C2 Proficiency qualification shows the world that you have mastered English to an exceptional level.

The course is organised into modules that mimic the different parts of the Cambridge English C2 Proficiency exam to enable students to become familiar with the format and question styles. Each part contains useful advice and strategies as well as relevant grammar points and resources to use to get more practice. Some parts also contain tutorial videos with specific tips for that exam part.

Course Format

This homework course introduces students to the format and requirements of the C2 Proficiency exam. They will have the opportunity to practice past exam questions and receive feedback on their performance.

  • Reading and Use of English Practice: advice, resources and interactive modules for the 7 reading and use of English parts of the exam
  • Listening Practice: advice, resources and interactive modules for the 4 listening parts of the exam
  • Writing Practice: advice, resources and interactive modules for the 2 writing parts of the exam
  • Speaking Practice: advice, resources and interactive modules for the 3 speaking parts of the exam

 

Reading Outline: The reading component of the course focuses on developing students’ ability to deal confidently with different types of text, such as fiction, newspapers and magazines. It tests your use of English with different types of exercise that show how well you can control your grammar and vocabulary.

The course covers the 7 parts of the Reading and Use of English part of the C2 Proficiency exam. Each part is explained and there are multiple interactive homework modules to complete to practice the skills needed for the following tasks:

Part 1: Choosing the correct word or phrase (from 4 options) to complete a text. Idioms, collocations, fixed phrases, complementation, phrasal verbs, semantic precision.

Part 2: Choosing the correct word or phrase (without a list of options to choose from) to complete a text. Awareness and control of grammar with some focus on vocabulary.

Part 3: Complete a text containing eight gaps. The stems of the missing words are given beside the text and must be changed to form the missing word. Vocabulary, in particular the use of affixation, internal changes and compounding in word formation.

Part 4: Six items with a lead-in sentence and a gapped response to complete in 3–8 words including a given ‘key’ word. Grammar, vocabulary and collocation.

Part 5: A text with some multiple-choice questions. Identifying detail, opinion, attitude, tone, purpose, main idea, implication and how a text is organised.

Part 6: Understanding of cohesion, coherence, text structure, global meaning. Decide from where in a text certain paragraphs have been removed.

Part 7: Understanding of detail, opinion, attitude and specific information. Match a prompt to elements in a text.

Listening Outline: The listening component of the course focuses on developing students’ ability to listen and understand spoken English. Students will practice listening to different types of recordings, such as news broadcasts, conversations, and interviews. They will also learn how to take notes and identify key information.

The course covers the 4 parts of the Listening part of the C2 Proficiency exam. Each part is explained and there are multiple interactive homework modules to complete to practice the skills needed to complete the following tasks:

Part 1: Listening for gist, detail, function, purpose, topic, speaker, addressee, feeling, attitude, opinion, etc. from three short, unrelated recordings lasting approximately 1 minute each.

Part 2: Listening for specific information, stated opinion in a monologue or prompted monologue lasting 3–4 minutes.

Part 3: Listening for opinion, gist, detail and inference in a recording with interacting speakers lasting 3–4 minutes.

Part 4: Five short, themed monologues, of approximately 35 seconds each. There are two multiple-matching tasks that require the selection of five correct options from a list of eight.

 

Writing Outline: The writing component of the course focuses on developing students’ ability to write different types of texts, such as emails, letters, and short essays. Students will learn how to structure their writing, develop ideas, and use appropriate grammar and vocabulary.

The course covers the 2 parts of the Writing part of the C2 Proficiency exam. Each part is explained and there are multiple interactive homework modules to complete to practice the following skills:

Part 1:  Writing a discursive essay in which you have to summarise and evaluate the key points contained in two texts of approximately 100 words each.

Part 2: Write a text from a choice of text types – an article, a letter, a report or a review. To guide your writing, you’ll be given information about the context.

Speaking Outline: The speaking component of the course focuses on giving students advice and guidelines to improve their ability to speak confidently and fluently in English. Students will be instructed to practice speaking in different contexts, such as giving presentations, participating in discussions, and expressing opinions.‍

The course covers the 4 parts of the Speaking part of the C2 Proficiency exam. Each part is explained and there are multiple interactive homework modules to complete to practice the following skills:

Part 1: Giving information about yourself and expressing your opinion or speculating about various topics.

Part 2: Sustaining an interaction: exchanging ideas, expressing and justifying opinions, agreeing and/or disagreeing, suggesting, speculating, evaluating, reaching a decision through negotiation, etc.

Part 3: Speaking on your own for a longer time, expressing and justifying opinions, developing topics.

What will you learn?
When a student finishes the Cambridge C2 Proficiency level preparation course and followed the advice for extra practice they will be ready to sit the exam, which shows that they have achieved an advanced level of English in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The qualification shows that the student has the language skills they need to communicate in an English-speaking environment. It shows the student is able to:
study demanding subjects at the highest level, including postgraduate and PhD programmes
negotiate and persuade effectively at senior management level in international business settings
understand the main ideas of complex pieces of writing
talk about complex or sensitive issues, and deal confidently with difficult questions.
They will have also developed their confidence in using English and proven they can communicate with the fluency and sophistication of a highly competent English speaker.
